December is one of Vienna's most atmospheric months to visit, and also one of its coldest — here's a realistic picture of what to expect, beyond the postcard version.

The weather is genuinely cold

Daytime temperatures typically sit around freezing or just above, with colder nights, and snow is a real possibility, especially later in the month. Pack a proper winter coat, not just a heavy jacket — you'll likely be outdoors more than expected, moving between Christmas markets.

Watch for holiday closures near Christmas itself

Many museums, restaurants and shops adjust their hours or close entirely on and around the 24th to 26th of December, and again for New Year — if you're visiting in that exact window, check specific opening hours in advance rather than assuming normal service.

Shorter days

Daylight is limited this far into winter — the sun sets mid-afternoon, which actually works in Vienna's favour, since it means Christmas markets and illuminated landmarks like the Rathaus are lit up for a large part of your visit rather than just the evening.
