Here's a shortlist of genuinely worthwhile things to do in Vienna without spending anything beyond your transport fare.
Palace and public gardens
The Schönbrunn and Belvedere gardens are both free to walk through, even though the palace interiors are ticketed — both offer some of the best views in the city as part of the bargain. The Volksgarten and Burggarten, tucked either side of the Hofburg, are smaller but lovely spots for a break, the latter home to a well-known Mozart monument.
Architecture you can see from the street
Vienna's Ringstrasse is lined with grand 19th-century public buildings — the Parliament, City Hall, the university, the Burgtheater — all impressive simply walked past or admired from a bench. In the older streets, keep an eye out for Hundertwasserhaus, the strikingly colourful, uneven apartment building designed by artist Friedrich Hundertwasser, which is free to view from outside (an information centre nearby explains the concept).
Free museum days and permanent free collections
Several of Vienna's museums, including some run by the city (Wien Museum locations), offer free entry on certain days or for permanent collections, with charges applying only to special exhibitions — check individual museum websites before you go, as policies vary and change.
Church interiors
Most of Vienna's churches, including St. Stephen's Cathedral's main nave, are free to step into, offering some of the city's finest interior architecture without a ticket — donations are always welcome and the sensible thing to do if you can.
Local tip
The view from the Gloriette terrace at Schönbrunn and the Belvedere's Upper Palace terrace are two of the best free viewpoints in Vienna — both better, in our opinion, than several paid observation decks around the city.
