Austria's national rail operator, ÖBB, has called 2026 a significant year for its network, with a timetable update that adds several new international connections departing Vienna — useful if you're weighing up day trips or short rail hops beyond the ones we've already covered.
What's new
The update includes a first-ever direct connection between Vienna and Poznan in Poland, an additional Vienna–Krakow service, and earlier and later trains on the Vienna–Prague route, making a long day trip to Prague more realistic than it was on the previous timetable. None of these quite match the ease of our existing day trips from Vienna picks — Bratislava, Salzburg, Budapest and the Wachau Valley — but they widen the realistic options for visitors with a bit more time or an interest in destinations further afield.
What this means for planning
If Prague, Krakow or Poznan are on your radar beyond Vienna itself, it's worth checking ÖBB's current timetable directly when booking, since schedules and journey times continue to be adjusted through the year.
