Vienna's mumok contemporary art museum opens a new hands-on Atelier on Saturday, 10 October 2026. For families visiting the MuseumsQuartier, this is more than a temporary children's corner: the museum has given an entire 140 m² level to creative work, with an opening-day programme running from 10 am to 6 pm. It is one of the more useful additions to a city itinerary if you want time to make something, rather than only look at things behind glass.
The new space sits on level minus three inside mumok at Museumsplatz 1. Designed with Viennese architect Christa Stürzlinger, it has tools and materials for experimenting with clay, plaster, charcoal, wool, paper, wood and metal offcuts. The museum's idea is hands-on discovery for different ages and abilities, rather than a single guided class that everyone must book in advance.
What happens at the opening on Saturday, 10 October?
The Atelier Reopening and Family Day runs from 10 am to 6 pm. The official programme includes drop-in creative stations in the new studio: painting, airbrush experiments, stamping and printmaking. A child who wants to try a postcard or some colour experiments can engage without committing to a long formal lesson. Individual programme activities do not require prior registration.
Extra activities take place on level minus two in Figure of the Child, an exhibition by Tolia Astakhishvili. These are participatory drawing and sketching areas rather than promises of a standard guided exhibition tour. The official event also lists a picture-book cinema programme and playful ways to explore museum artworks. Each programme component may have age guidance, so check the detailed schedule before promising a particular activity to a younger child.
The combination gives families a flexible visit: a short art experiment, a pause to explore the modern-art collection or an exhibition, and another creative stop before leaving. This is particularly welcome if your party includes people who do not usually love traditional art museums.
Is the opening free? The important distinction
Children and young people under 19 enter mumok and participate in the opening activities free of charge. Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. For accompanying adults, the museum states that its opening programme is available with a valid exhibition ticket or annual pass. Do not read the word 'free' on a family-event listing as a blanket promise of free museum admission for every adult.
You do not need to register for the individual programme activities on the opening day. That is different from guaranteeing an empty workstation at your preferred moment: a popular family event can still involve queues or waits. For a comfortable visit, allow time to move between activities without relying on a rigid minute-by-minute schedule.
What changes after the opening weekend?
From Tuesday, 13 October, the Atelier runs free creative stations Tuesdays to Fridays, 10 am to 6 pm, without prior registration. Young visitors under 19 participate free, while accompanying adults need a valid museum exhibition ticket. The museum says activities will rotate, with fresh techniques and materials offered every two weeks. Its first marbling or 'floating colour' station is announced for 13–16 and 20–23 October.
Weekend use works differently: the Atelier reserves time slots for bookable workshops rather than keeping the same weekday walk-in format. The museum lists Saturday workshops for 17, 24 and 31 October and Sunday workshops for 18 and 25 October. Anyone planning a family weekend later in the month should check the current workshop availability instead of assuming the weekday drop-in arrangements apply.
Another good day: Sunday, 11 October
One day after the Atelier opening, mumok has announced Dorotheum Day on Sunday, 11 October, 10 am to 6 pm, with free admission, guided tours and an open studio with creative stations. This is a separate museum-wide offer and may suit adults who prefer not to buy a standard admission ticket. As with the opening, check the museum's current calendar for any programme updates.
The museum also lists an evening karaoke event on Saturday, 10 October, from 7 pm to 10 pm. That is a separate programme item, not an extension of the 10 am–6 pm family workshop timetable.
How to fit mumok into a Vienna day
mumok is inside the MuseumsQuartier cultural complex, close to the Leopold Museum and several other galleries. Rather than cross the city for a single short workshop, pair the visit with a walk around the MuseumsQuartier courtyards and, if you are travelling with a mixed-age group, choose one additional museum rather than trying to do everything.
For the opening weekend, build the day around the fixed 10 am–6 pm family-event hours. For visits from 13 October, choose a Tuesday-to-Friday slot if you particularly want to use the no-booking creative stations. Weekend visitors should look at the workshop calendar first. The museum's ordinary public opening days are Tuesday to Sunday, 10 am–6 pm; it is not a seven-day-a-week venue.
